The 4th Of July

On this day, the 235th anniversary of The United States, signing of the Declaration of Independence, I would like to share the words written on the base of the Statue of Liberty:

The New Colussus
by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of
Greek fame,
With conquering limbs
astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed,
sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a
torch, whose flame
Is the imprisioned light-
ning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her
Glows the world-wide wel-
come; her mild eyes com-
The air-bridged harbor
that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your
storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me
your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of
your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless,
tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the
Golden door!"

Nice post :)

wow i just can't get this off my mind the one thing everyone knows is the old girl who means freedom, and i never knew the words. I have lived and fought for my country. I thank you darlene for teaching me the words that have been wrote on the old girl the Statue of Liberty. (allsosad)

darlene i found it very sad to never have known the words written on the Statue of Liberty. I have to say it brought tears to my eyes. I never even taught them to my kids. Dam *** shame to have lived my hole life and fought for these great country of ours, and you don't even know those wonderful words that are written on the one old girl that we all know so well that means freedom. (allsosad)

Great post. God Bless and save the USA.

thanks Ms. Leigh xx

May God Bless America+the flamethrower!Miss u LMx

Thanks for commenting, Rick. You know I don't talk politics, so have at it!

One thing we have to keep in mind though is that the world around us has changed drastically and the way people live their lives has changed longer can we accept all who wish to live here as it is not possible for all to be self sufficient as it was when these words were written. No longer can we accept the "wretched refuse" because not all of them are yearning to be free.....sadly many of them would like to see this great nation fail and fall and would happily work towards that end.<br />

That being said i agree that America is the best place in the world to live, our freedoms are like no other nation in the world, our military that protects those freedoms consists entirely of volunteers rather than forced servitude. America is a country we should be proud of as citizens.

Yes, Owlie, I feel the same. *shivers* we have a country to be proud of, even when sometimes we don't agree with things, it's still the best country in the world. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Everytime I read this I get goosebumps..because I'm proud of our many have lived and died for these beliefs and the concept of Freedom, safety, a home for all to be as one. It's a hard world and yet the USA continues to help any country who needs assistance to gain freedom from tyrany.

Then you should have no problem getting there! Is it true they don't let people go up to the crown anymore?

Your welcome. I haven't either, but it's one of the things I want to do before I die.

Me to.And I will,Im from NY State.

Thank You for posting this.Ive never been to the statue of Liberty.

Nor have I.
