Like Watching a Wallpaper Catalogue...

From the first time I saw Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo I was absolutely blown away by the art style.  It is what I call a 'marmite' series.  I showed the first three episodes to an anime society a few years ago and they hated it - especially the psychedelic end sequence.  I think it's beautiful though.  I could happily just sit and watch the texture of the Count's hair.

I also know some people don't like the way that it's changed the story though.  Yes, it's sort of futuristic in random places.  Yes, the Count is some weird blue space-vampire.  Yes, the whole fate of Edmond Dantes is totally different.  But it's still wonderful, unique and exciting to watch.  Let's face it, there is no other anime with such a brilliantly unique art style and it does have some wonderfully likable characters (e.g. Franz).

Gankutsuou does achieve a high place in my favourite animes of all time.  It's up there, rubbing shoulders with Mononoke Hime and Mushishi...

I've already see 'Last Exile'. It's also very good.

I agree with you, and if you like that you should watch LAST EXILE.<br />

it's not weird looking but it is done by the same artist.
