Blockade Runner That Never Made It ....

The Iona was a paddle steamer built in Govan on the river Clyde in 1855  to serve as a ferry between Glasgow and Ardrishaig .Her new engine design and twin paddles gave her a top speed of 24 knots , one of the fastest ships of her time . She was bought by a confederate agent Mr Bulloch  complete with a part cargo , of which was a consignment of crystal glass,s . The afore mentioned glass,s were mentioned in his book of the sinking of the vessel in the clyde in 1862 . On her maiden voyage as a blockade runner where he stated that if they run out of buckshot they would break up the crystal glass,s and fire that from the cannon to protect the vessel, alas she sunk after a collision with a mystery vessel in the dead of night. My friend who shall remain nameless is an avid diver and has visited the the wreck several times . He has invited me to listen to his extensive knowledge of the story of the Iona over a nice malt and accompanying Cuban cigars  which i am only to happy to supply as we shall be savoring the fine spirit from two of the glass,s from the wreck on the Iona .
