Invictus- A Poem That Inspired Nelson Mandela

I thought, instead of writing my feelings which are not of much use to anybody, I should post some inspirational words which actually can help someone. It's always better to find all the things in one place. so I am posting all the poems I collected form various sources. Whenever I am feeling depressed, I read these poems for strength.

Readers, If you have any inspiring poem or story, please add it here and make this group a beautiful one. I love to collect them.

This is a Poem 'Invictus' (Unconquered, Undefeated) by William Henley. Great South African Leader Nelson Mandela (Madiba) was inspired by the poem, and had it written on a scrap of paper on his prison cell while he was incarcerated for 27 years on Robben Island.

I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Whenever we read obscene stories, the voluptuous debacheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the bible is filled, it would be more consistant that we called it the word of a demon, than the word of god. It is a history of wickedness, that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind and for my own part I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel. Thomas Paine

Nelson Mandela was a murderer. Look up church road massacre. He killed poor black farm labourers. While in prision, his wife sanctioned the use of necklacing. This is where a tyre is placed around the body of victim, arms held at their sides. Then its set on fire. It takes at least 20 minutes for them to die . David Cameron ( who was at his funeral) campaigned for ole nelson to be put to death in the 80s for crimes against humanity. Nelson is guilty of genocide with a smile , after his release. Not taking away from him that hewas indeed a clever man . He knew how to apease both sides. He didn't speak up for the white farmers being murdered. He spoke the right words but failed in his actions. He was meant to want equality. The media has brain washed the sheep , do your own reserch and don't get caught up in media frenzys. We were all born with a brain, use it , instead of being lazy and believing what you are told to believe. I know some of you are gonna be horrified at what im saying, and its you people who have the laziest brains.

great..motivation poem

This Poem is so inspiring & powerful. Never a day went by that I didn't read this poem to help me overcome & endure 98 days of the darkest period of my life. Nothing in comparison to the 27 years of imprisonment that Nelson Mandela had to endure.
Rest In Peace Madiba.

I woke up here in Michigan at 3:15 a.m. to find out by my son about Mr.Mandela. Tears just fell down my face. I only know what the media has said since I can remember. That goes back to 1985. I lived in Philadelphia. I remember the pressure American companies were under. Specifically I remember coke-cola being one of them. I was ready to stop drinking their products because...then he's freed...then president.....their is much, much more....but now he can finally rest.....WELL DONE

C'mon, I appreciate your sincerity towards the death of Mandela but are you seriously that ******* stupid..? Please learn to string sentences together with even the slightest hint of coherence before posting anywhere in a public domain ever again. Ever.

The world has lost one of the Greatest Statesman tonight R. I. P. Madiba

Rest in peace, Nelson Mandela

thanks. Prafful. Nice to have your comment. See if you can read more about Mandela, i.e. there is one beautiful book called, 'A long walk to freedom' it very good.

Hi MadibaNation,
I am trying to recall the words credited to Madiba in the film, when he has made the decision to keep the mostly white team as the nation's team despite the outcry to replace them. In the film he says something akin to, "Sometimes the people do not know what is best for them." Can anybody help me with the accurate quote (from the movie)?

HI, i have the film but I will have to search for it, you can download the subtitles and search that quote.

thank you artsy. it's always nice to see your comments.

follow our twitter account in honour of madiba,

@MrsCole1 : Thanks for your comment. Yes, that's true. Madiba is wonderful person and can do miracles. I wish him all good health and long life. the world needs him.

Invictus has to be the best movie I ever saw. Thank you for writing down that poem, I love it. I have great respect for Nelson Mandela, he brought a lot of goodness to the world. We wouldn't be were we are today, if he hadn't been there!

Lines of Nelson Mandela from the film Invictus-Reconciliation starts here. Forgiveness starts here too. It libereates the soul, removes the fear. The Day I am afraid to do that, is the day I am no longer fit to lead.

Hey thanks for your comment. did you check the others too? I love them.

oopsss i am sorry titan!!! i thought the poem was longer and tried to make ur comment scroll down for some reason!! :( ...i love this poem tho, its so...strong =]

yes, I have seen the film Invictus. Morgan Freeman performed awesome. and Madiba is greatest of all.

Hi cabcraft, thanks for your comment. I'm glad you liked it. Madiba is one of the great people this planet has seen. A true leader. Have you seen him? This poem sounds more powerful when Morgan Freeman says it in his baritone voice in the film Invictus.

I just remembered another popular small poem about Madiba.but don't remeber the author-

Your bounty threatens me Mandela,
That traut drumskin of your heart,
on which, our millions dance,
I fear, we latch, fat leeches on your veins.

Thank you Titan, this is fantastic. I am South African, and love Madiba. I have heard the words before, but didn't know the connection.
