"..he Gave His Only Son" - Who Would Do That??

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

I have grown up listening to this verse..I have never thought about it in detail or tried to understand it. last night when i opened up my bible and it opened to John 3, so i had a read of the chapter.

John is expressing that God was willing to give up his son, to sacrifice his one and only son for us..FOR US!, God then promises/offers that we can have eternal life in paradise with him.

this sounds like a good deal to me, Gods sacrifice just reconfirms the fact that he loves us, and would do anything for us..we should have this same attitude towards our God and also to our neighbours as they also need to be thanked for their good works, godly spirit and faith.

I am very thankful that I live in a country where i can have my religious belief and not punished for beeing a believer, also the fact that at school and church I can worship and praise my God freely.

The god of the bible RECOMMENDS rape told the Jewish tribes to kidnap virgin women from other tribes and make them "wives" the god of the bible recommends genocide as in when King Saul is ordered to kill whole tribes including the infants and children even the cattle. Surely you have read these things ?

I understand that the Bilbe is full of these but the reason for these is because it is described as a guide how to live. If a person is raped, they are able to look in the bible and read about how to live with the hatred, disappointment and other which comes with the horrible experience of rape. The bibe has also been very useful to professions such as Pshycology. As well as beeing something to live by it is also a useful tool.

I respect what is respectable. Christianity is evil and not respectable. In fact when someone says something that is in error that is harmful to themselves and others it is wrong to play along with that. The bible is full of genocide , rape , slavery and murder hardly a benign book.

Thankyou sylvia07 for shareing, I have learnt around me that the people that have the strongest Faith have 'fallen', within these times they have gone through stages of nil faith in God, to anger, and also finally repenting in God and coming to the realisation that preying, even just thinking about your issuse, with God somewhere in mind and having faith, will help them out of the 'darkest valley' and into the light. These people that have 'fallen' create the genuine, humble, understaning and educated (through personal experiences) people in our soceioty - which we could use more of.

Thankyou shf84 your opinion is valued, I would like to think that you could respect the opinion that I shared and that others have shared also on this EP, Just as I respect yours.Yes the 'story' has been 'Kicked' around, although one of the main points of having Jesus in your life is, that you have to be a believer. Having Faith... I do have a Faith in Jesus Christ, that is why when someone tells me that the Bible is a Book of 'stories' or mythical as such, I listen to the opinion of the individual but also I get to choice if it is valid to me and to my Faith. I believe that the Jesus is not a mythical individual but rather as a Life Saver - to all of us.

wonderfully written ... i totally agree with your attitude as a response to HIS love and grace and forgiveness.

just as you and ToBeWhite, i have questions upon my faith and bible and God and so many things related, i did try to find the answer to each question using my own way. until one day, through His amazing work, He told me that faith is all about believing and striving positively into the right path. faith is following the unseen, projecting the positive result and be a posibility thinker.
some questions are better left unexplained because we our mind may not have enough room to cope.
people who dont believe may say that this is just some excuse made to mislead others, but if we believe, it wont matter what they say.
just believe that even when God allows us fall down deep in the darkest valley, He'd never let go of our hand and will surely carry us home if we keep the faith and repent.

The whole sacrifice the son for the sins of the world story has been kicking around the mid east for a long time. The Egyptians even have son of Rah that was killed for our sins etc. there are several other versions of it as well. It's just an old piece of mythology from that aria of the world , I wouldn't take it seriously as any thing but a story.

Thank you! TobeWhite, I also have many Questions to be answered, But if it helps ill try give some insight of my views on this matter, This sound a lot like a baby that dies within it first few weeks of life, they do not have the chance to grow up and go to church or develop any religious views, I believe that God sent them to earth for a short time as a lesson to all of us.. But as humans we will never be able to grab the concept of like or to answer the question "What is the meaning of life?" we just haven't been gifted with that ability. I guess we can ask God when we get there.. Thats if we do.

Make no mistake I am no stranger to Christianity. I was raised in the church and believe that Christians have their hearts in the right place... but I have a question that remains unanswered.

Take for example a tribe in a remote part of Africa, who do not know of Jesus Christ, and will not in their lifetime have that ministry. Do they go to hell? What if one particular tribe member has a good heart and a good soul and does right by everyone his entire life (which is more than you or I have done isn't it) because he believes it is the way his creator intended life to be. Now take into account he thinks his creator is a big rock on a hill (hey I didn't say he was the smartest tribe member). Is he worshiping a false idol? Straight to hell for him too then?

The biggest lie Christianity ever told was that Jesus Christ was God, because God existed before Christianity. The world existed before Christianity, and man most certainly existed before Christianity. And in the humble opinion of this writer God will exist long after Christianity.

I love God, and I love people with good hearts and good souls, and those that try to do right by their fellow man and creator. I suppose I'm still going to hell aren't I. At least I'll have some good people like that tribesman to keep me company.

God bless you all and I admire your faith even if it is in Jesus Christ and not a rock on a hill.
