John Lennon "imagine"

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

What a beautiful song. It captures the simple desires that we all have for Peace and Justice. If only we could put the effort into achieving these things as we do to means of destruction. What is it about humanity that makes us so afraid of each other?
I think that in the dawn of human evolution when the first groups of people came together and realized that they were stronger and more productive and happier that the problem arose. A group living on one side of a hill would band together and things would go well. However when they encountered a group from the other side of the hill there was some instant feeling that the new group was a threat to the happiness that the first group had found. Rather than combining resources and talents, these groups somehow decided that conflict was the course to take. We have been suffering from this delusion ever since.
Add religion to the list of reasons that people often fail to get along. Each of the early groups would have had some type of mystical belief system that was put in place by those who had assumed leadership in order to enhance and protect their own standing. Obviously, any group that had established their own set of beliefs was an enemy. Sadly, religion continues to cause more hatred, bitterness and division than any other single cause to this very day.
It is worth noting that Lennon spoke of people. He never mentioned color or ethnicity. Something to think about.
