Question On Making Maple Syrup

I live in southern VA. No one around here makes maple syrup. I don't know if there is a reason. This year I tried it. We tapped 40 trees on our land and collected about 50 gallons of sap. We boiled it down last week and got 7 pints of syrup.

My question is. Some of the trees we tapped gave almost no sap. All trees were reds. Some would put out 2 liters a day when the sap is flowing. I don't uderstand why so many trees did almost nothing. Any ideas? If so please email me directly mccounandsons@live.com THANKS MM

Hi - your question interested me and I found this site
http://www.massmaple.org/flow.html
which might answer some of your questions, but maybe you already know the site. Seems that pressure is the key thing and can vary with many different conditions.
