Question On Making Maple Syrup

I live in southern VA. No one around here makes maple syrup. I don't know if there is a reason. This year I tried it. We tapped 40 trees on our land and collected about 50 gallons of sap. We boiled it down last week and got 7 pints of syrup.

My question is. Some of the trees we tapped gave almost no sap. All trees were reds. Some would put out 2 liters a day when the sap is flowing. I don't uderstand why so many trees did almost nothing. Any ideas? If so please email me directly THANKS MM

Hi - your question interested me and I found this site

which might answer some of your questions, but maybe you already know the site. Seems that pressure is the key thing and can vary with many different conditions.
