Cool Squishy MudI'll never forget the first time I went wading in the mud. It was a hot humid afternoon in August 1984. I was 13. I was at the lake with my evil sisters, who were 15 and 16 at the time. They were evil because they loved to get me in trouble, and the fastest way to get in trouble with our mom was committing an offense related to wearing socks. The two worst things we could do were get our socks wet or wear our socks outside without shoes, and my sisters were great at doing both of those things. That's why they spent nearly all of their time as teenagers being grounded.
We were at the lake and my sisters told me to walk into the mud with my socks on. I really wanted to, but I remembered mom's reaction to them wading into the mud in their socks the year before that. It wasn't pretty. I told them I would get into trouble, but they said I should do it because it feels good. That's true. It did feel good. In fact, it's one of the best feelings I ever experienced.
My sisters continued to tell me to go in the mud in my socks, then they told me that if I did they would. I finally agreed and I waded into the mud with my white tube socks that had three red stripes around the top. My sisters held up there part of the deal. They took off their shoes and stood on the grass by the lake in their socks. My oldest sister was wearing white terry cuff socks with a red and pink stripe around the cuff, and my middle sister was wearing plain white terry cuff socks. The first step only got their socks muddy up to their ankles, but each step brought them deeper into the mud, and soon their pants were also soaked in mud from their knees down.
That was a great time, exploring the muddy shallow part of the lake. Soon enough the sun went down and it was time to go home and pay the piper. We looked in the window and mom was watching TV, so we were going to enter the kitchen through the garage. As soon as we opened the door between the kitchen and the garage, mom was standing there, and she was pissed!
There went four weeks of my life down the drain being grounded without TV!
