My Little Joy

Kolo is my girl. She's the best dog one can have, especially for a working person who is gone 10-12 hours a day. She sleeps in the garage or backyard most of he day and is totally nondistructive. She doesn't even bark. When my husband and I come home, she gets very excited - she calls to us from the garage, a deep "woo woo woo" (this is the only time she barks) and is 105 pounds of pure energy when we let her in. She's smelly and drools a lot, but totally makes up for it with her sweet demeanor.

Amazingly, Kolo is not unique. Many newfs are just as sweet as her, some maybe even sweeter. A few weekends ago, I helped shave and bathe five male newfs who had been surrendered to a dog rescue operation. These boys, who hadn't been pet and in some cases even fed well in over a year, were as sweet as could be. However, even with five strangers rolling them on their backs, shaving their bellies, and doing all kinds of scary things, not one of the dogs nipped at us -- not even once.

So here's a toast to all the good dogs out there...
