Purring For Five Measures

i have loved a thousand,
lost a thousand, still,
when this fair night collides with dawn,
my chance for healthy slumber gone,
a thousand here will yet remain
lined out upon the sill.

i have held a kitten,
seen her play and sleep,
while curling up inside my arms
her purr seems louder in the dark,
her hair the color of a kiss,
her eyes the hue of dreams.

there are years between us,
lifetimes that divide,
but this i have come to expect
and there are ways to drive them back,
a friend for every enemy,
an ebb in every tide.
