What Prompted My Historical Crush On Voltaire

I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it.

The secret of being boring is to tell everything.

The best is the enemy of the good.

There are truths which are not for all men, or for all times.

Common sense is not so common.

God is a comedian playing to an audience too afraid to laugh.

I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

It is an infantile superstition of the human spirit that virginity would be thought a virtue and not the barrier that separates ignorance from knowledge.

I read up on Voltaire when I was seventeen and fell in love.  This sassy French philosopher was a rebel, a famous lover, and a great satirist to boot.  Anyone interested in his character should check out the book Voltaire in Love about one of his most famous love affairs with a (married) woman who was his intellectual equal.
