Rumi Says Play Music

"Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened.  Don't open the door to the study and begin reading.                                                             Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.                                                      There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

Rumi, may God be pleased with him - he drives many Muslims crazy with his encouragement towards things that are not orthodoxically praised in Islam.

But he is not to be read literally.  I see him not trying to guide the elite and knowledgeable believers.  He is the street preacher who speaks in the street language.  He talks about wine, love and sex.  He talks about leaving the study and playing the musical instrument.  But he's talking to the average guy who is still madly in love with the pleasures of the world.  He understands them, he understands their attraction and attachment to these simple pleasures.

But it doesn't mean that he is also attached to these things.  To the comtemplating ones - his message is - to me - take a break from the superficial righteousness.  Don't study non-stop and think yourself a scholar or a student of knowledge.  "There are hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground"

There are ways to please the Creator by entertaining His needy souls.  Make them happy with their faith in God.  Make them feel good by speaking to them in the language they can understand.  Serenade them with the songs about God.  This life is not meant to be uptight!

I thank you God for the pleasures of this world that You declared safe and comforting for our lives.  I thank You Lord Most High for warning us about those vices that will cause misery to our lives.  And I await the Abode in Paradise with Everlasting Pleasures beyond compare to the ones in this lowly abode of the world.

Islam is an easy religion, and not one of compulsion...
