I Love Second Hand Book Stores
To me, there is no greater joy than to let the fleeting world pass you by and just... stroll around in a second hand book store.
I can literally spend hours gawking at books in the store searching for little jewels. For example: I once found a 3rd print Alice in Wonderland. Only a booklover finds such a thing a rarity. That's how I believe not even an Ipad or Kindle can replace a printed book: because I could not ever give up that delicious smell of an aged book.
It takes me to the most marvelous places. Not only the novels themselves, nor even the small hints of previous owners (a written adress on the corner of a book; who would have been the owner, would the book have meant something to him/her?, ...) but also: the shops themselves. If there's anything I can say about second hand bookstores it's that the're brimming with personality and charm. I lost my heart at some of them either in my hometown or abroad.
One of my beloved and most precious places? Shakespeare & Company in Paris. It's a little Bohemian English used bookstore with a marvelous motto: "Be kind to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise."
I remember going there for the first time, ended up staying there for 3 hours. It felt as if ten minutes had passed and I was the happiest man in the world.
