My First Love, The Sunflower

I first fell in love with sunflowers when I was introduced to Vincent VanGogh.

His sunflowers exuded such personality; not always perky or perfect but honest and beautiful.

Taken from the field or garden and captured in a vase
makes them look even scraggly and oddly out of place.
Their sturdy stems uphold each heavy bowing head
while their darkened faces look at me; friendly and intent
I dare to say that in the a vase is not where they belong
but in a field among so many beautiful and strong
It is sad but beautiful; a cut sunflower in a vase
but I would rather see the flower in a field, in its rightful place.

The sunflower's natural beauty has never been expressed so perfectly.
