The Welsh Wizards

They are music's greatest secret! I cannot tell you just how much I adore this band:)

SFA formed in Cardiff in 1993 by Gruff Rhys (lead vocals, guitar), Huw Bunford (lead guitar, vocals),Guto Pryce (bass guitar), Cian Ciran (keyboards, synthesizers, various electronics,  guitar, vocals) and Dafydd Ieuan (drums, vocals). They started off in techno, but soon evolved into the glorious amalgamation of psychedelia , folk, punk  and electronic wizardry that some of us know and love them for.

Ice Hockey Hair is simply the most wonderous concoction, 'If you don't want me to destroy you' is simply divine, their lyrics take in Gandhi (Do or die), Capitalism (Juxtaposed with you) El Nino (Northern Lights), Robin Friday (The man don't give a f***), and even have Paul McCartney on er  "carrot and celery on 'Receptacle for the Respectable'.

Their videos are something else. 'Juxtaposed with you' was released just prior to 9/11 and the video is eerily prescient 'Ice hockey hair' features a balaclava clad table tennis match, and a photo booth, and 'Northern Lites' is a hoot.

Gruff Rhys also has his Neon Neon side project, and they occasionally sing in Welsh, and it all sounds just as wonderful. Someone called them the Welsh Beatles, and whilst they will never have that Zeitgeist impact, musically oh yes!

Wake up to their genius!
