Get Off the Pavement

I love to get off the paved roads; up into the hills along the dirt roads.  The places where streams are still crossed at fords, and where getting out and walking ahead on a mountain curve is a prudent idea.

I love to travel the old federal and state highways from before the days of the Interstates.  Finding the little businesses and cafes that have been there for a generation of more, and meeting the people who run them.

Seeing the landscape at a more leisurely pace, on a road that follows it, and respects it, instead of cutting through it.

See all the small towns that the Interstates skipped past, and left to die.

That's nice, too! But that stories in a different group. :-)

The best place I ever lived was the farthest from a major highway, and I think those two facts were related.
