Lyrical Genius

As noted by one of me EP friends this morning, my statuses the last day or two reveal that I have a bit of a Lyle Lovett jones going at the moment. I've been a fan of his for decades, but he somehow falls of my playlist for months at a time.  Of course that just gives me the opportunity to rediscover his music and lyrical genius over and over. You can hate Texas, you can ignore Texas Country music, but you have to acknowledge genius.

"If I Were the Man You Wanted"
Lyle Lovett

They all sat around in a circle
They were all laughing and all telling lies
Then the tall one he bumped in a dollar
He said boys I've got nothing to hide
Now if the King and the Queen stood together
Then the ace he would not be to blame
And if the cards were all laid on the table
Then love could be more than a game

And if the stars didn't shine on the water
Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand
And if I were the man you wanted
I would not be the man that I am

And I have seen my share of long nights
And I have told my share of lies
And I have run into the darkness
When I saw the look in your eyes
But if the night didn't lie in the darkness
Then the daylight would be hard to find
And if the truth didn't turn to a weakness
I would have never have spoken my mind

And if the stars didn't shine on the water
Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand
And if I were the man you wanted
Then I would not be the man that I am

So if you're going out to Carolina
Then don't linger in New Mexico
And if you think of the one there behind you
Then you might not feel so alone

And if the stars didn't shine on the water
Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand
And if I were the man you wanted
I would not be the man that I am

I love Lyle. Lyrics are what move a person...at least they do me.

Yeah, he's just "cool" in an odd kind of way.

He is! The best kind. :)

Interesting lyrics and yet there is one part of them that really hits to the heart. Thanks you for sharing. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed. Interestingly, my "Lyle" jones seems to be back again this morning.

Indeed interesting...sometimes lyrics just apply and it's like soft embraces, one cannot get enough and the feelings that they give are truly inspiring and exhilarating.

I should really listen to him again. Quirky lyrics, good songs, hidden meanings. (Well, not always hidden)

I'll admit he can be somewhat of an acquired taste, but worth the price of acquisition I believe. "Quirky" is a very apt description.

My favorite......I married her cause she looked like you. ......

My dad loves Lyle Lovett - have listened to him since the 80s. alphadave, that's a good one.

You hit it right with the "quirky" description lld3.... being Calvin Kliens nephew garners him a lot of leverage though.....Elvis Costello is another that lyrically go beyond the typical
