The Trees - By Rush

This sounds weird but I love trees.

And this sounds like an acorn eating, vegan, new-ager thing to say, but I just like to look at trees and wonder what they have "seen" over their lifetime. When I drive on a lazy day and I see a freshly cut, large stump, I often pull over and count the rings.

A long time ago, a hemlock crashed into a spot where I was to be married. (Now no longer) . As I cleared out the area, I inspected the stump and counted 213 rings! That meant that I was clearing away the debris left by something that was a sapling when George Washington was alive!

Anyway, that's why I like this song by Rush. It give life to the trees:

There is unrest in the forest
there is trouble with the trees
'cause the maples have no sunlight
and the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples
(and they're quite convinced they're right)
is you oaks are just too lofty
and you grab up all the light

But the oaks can't help their feelings
if they like the way they're made
and can't see why the maples
can't be happy in their shade

In the place I used to live, there was an old pine tree. It was cold to the touch. I often wondered what it had seen. I know my property saw a fire...and before that it was a hunting ground in the time of the Pilgrims....and there was a skirmish there with the Indians, just a block away....but that tree was almost three hundred years old.

Neat. It'd be neat if trees could talk, like in Lord of the Rings. The old ones would have some stories to tell, I'd bet.
