Going Through Hell And Back Again

 Alan here,  part 1

Back in  December of 1997, I had a bad car accident. I woke up three days later. Not knowing where I was or what was happening. I tried to signal for nurse, But I could not move. I was lying there on a ventilator. A ventilator is a machine that helps you breathe  when you cannot breathe on your own.

After a few minutes  a nurse finally came in to check on me and saw that I was awake. I could not speak to her because of being  on the ventilator. When you are on such a machine, you also have a plastic trach in your neck so they can connect you to the  ventilator. On the outside of that plastic trach there is a balloon that needs to be blown up to make a  seal inside your trachea (airway) so no air escapes.

After laying there awhile, I finally figured it out. I was now a full-blown quadriplegic. I was paralyzed from my neck to my toes. I had no feeling whatsoever.

What I didn't know was that I was in for  a life of pure hell. From that  moment on nothing was ever going to be the same again. I was destined to be on a ventilator for the rest of my life. More to follow.
