I Love to Sew
This morning I found myself reminiscing about my Graduation – no so much about the Graduation Ceremony which took place the day before … but the Dinner. This was the late ‘70s and the effects of what had taken place seven years before in my country still resonated within me.
I attended an all girls Catholic School where some of the Rules could be considered oppressive. That being said, at a meeting with the Graduating Class, it was outlined what the traditional code of dress was for the Dinner – white, ankle length and of course not revealing. Unbeknownst to my classmates and certainly the Faculty, I already had my design of dress ... and I had no intentions of changing it.
When I arrived at the Dinner to me everyone looked the same – long flowing white dresses, some with frills, some with lace and ribbons, etc. But then there was me! I am sure many were shocked when I arrived but did and/or could not say anything.
I wore an off white, calf length dress with brown stitching … the blouse of which was a back wrap and the skirt, not tight, but form fitting, with an inverted pleat at the back. The sleeves and the top front were gathered. I wore brown accessories, brown shoes, stockings, etc. While the other girls had drop curls and the likes – yes, you got it! I had a big ‘fro. Ohhh! Did I make a statement!!! Only one guest applauded me on my style … she was Syrian by descent.
I am still not a disciple of the fashion designs and designers … I prefer to do my thing!
