Maya / My Prison Cell

Inspiration: Mahmoud Darwish’s “Prison Cell”

Two windows gazing out at sea
A bright light shines though one
The other hidden behind a tree
It’s like locking a tiger in a birdcage
It’s like being cast in stone
In the midst of unending ugliness
Ignorance
Inconsideration
Inferiority
Utter stupidity
The light reveals what the tree conceals
Inner turmoil inside the room
Constricting darkness, hope that heals
It’s like being bullied for what God chose
It’s like being tested beyond human tolerance
Enduring
Suffering
Transcending
Life’s throes
Two windows gazing out at sea
Whether built in stone or to the soul
Define the days
The fight
And triumphs
My life
And me
