Is This Motherly Love?
How's this for weird? Once a female kangaroo becomes pregnant, she is always pregnant. TRUE. A female kangaroo retains at least one fertilized egg from each fertilization, so that she can develop a pregnancy whilst having another "on hold". If threatened by a predator or enviromental hardshIp (drought, fire etc.) after giving birth, she can discard the recently born offspring and later, when it is safe, proceed with the "suspended" pregnacy. This also offers some self-protection, because if confronted by a predator a female 'roo will throw her young away to distract the predator and allow her to escape and then develop the new pregnancy. Weird or what?
