baseball player Mark McGwire set a new record for most home runs in a season in 1998. His record-setting 70th home run ball was caught by a fan who sold it for $3 million at auction. This was the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold.

In 2002 the Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonsalez auctioned a piece of used chewing gum online which made $10,000.

Following elbow surgery Jeff Nelson, a pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, put up the bone chips from his elbow for sale on ebay. Bidding went up to $23,600 before ebay stopped the auction, stating that they had a rule against the sale of human body parts.
