While the big bombers -- the Lancaster and the Flying Fortress, and the Superfortress -- were definitely ruled the countervalue warfare against the homelands, the B-26 "Widowmaker" should get as much credit for the tactical support it provided in the Pacific and in advance of the Alllied forces moving east through France into Germany. Its descendant, the A-10 Thunderbolt II (alias the Warthog) may have won the Ugliest Military Aircraft award, but they say it has been a welcome sight for many a ground unit caught under fire.
