Zp 6

“I have a van out in the staff parking lot. We can do some reconnaissance and if there aren’t any of them out there we can make a run for it.” I was shaking my head after he said van.
“Where do you think we are going? How are we going to eat? We don’t even have any guns-” I stopped myself from rambling he knew our situation.
“The cafeteria is right next to the staff parking lot.” His tone of voice was telling me this was an awesome idea, “We can try and get some supplies from there into the van.  As for weapons, well, I’m sure you don’t just need a gun to kill them. We could use table legs or something.” I looked at him skeptically and took another drink of water wishing I had something stronger.
“Why are you talking to me?” I asked trying to avoid the inevitable.  He frowned at me.
“No offense or anything Alex but you don’t talk to anyone.” He seemed to think about what he was going to say before he answered.
“Because you’re a smart girl.” I took another drink of water. That sounded like a lame pick up line.
“Out of all the people in the room you and Jose are the only ones I can trust. You seem like you’re capable of taking care of yourself. I want you on my team.” He said. I thought about it for a second and nodded.
“Ditto.” I said, he chuckled but I didn’t think it was funny.
I took a deep breath, “Fine, but if we’re going to do some recon I don’t want Julie knowing about it until were ready to leave for the van. She’ll just try to stop us or lock us out or something. Jose seems like he’s capable of holding his own he can come too if he wants. I don’t know about the two girls though. I’ve never even met them before.” I took the last drink of my water and threw the cup in the trash.
“That leaves Maggie.” I said it grimly. Alex sat back against the wall and looked at the floor.
“We should leave her.” he said. I tried not to flinch but I couldn’t help it. It was a very logical decision. I couldn’t lie to myself, the thought had crossed my mind a few times already, but it was also a very immoral decision. “She’s just going to slow us down and possibly get us killed.” Alex said.
“I think it’s a given she’s going to get us killed.” I cringed at my own words.
We thought about it for a second and I said, “But we can’t just leave her here. How about we give Julie an ultimatum? You know there’s no way she’s going to work with us without one anyway. She obviously doesn’t want to be left here alone as we saw before when the other students left. How about we will let her tag along if she takes care of Maggie? That way we don’t have to deal with Maggie and if Julie doesn’t cooperate we can leave Maggie here with her and not feel bad about it later.”
“Whatever makes you feel better, I was just going to say leave both of them here. There’s no way that woman is going to let anything get past her. She’s a major control freak.” He said. He stood up wiping the seat of his pants.
“Okay so how are we going to get weapons without her knowing what’s up?” I said.  He went to the sink and washed his hands under the faucet.
“We can tell her we’re just getting prepared for if the zombies get in.”
I nodded. “Ok are you going to tell Jose or should I?  I don’t know the girls but from their smart *** remarks earlier I don’t think they will have any problem with keeping a secret from Julie.” Alex nodded.
“I’ll tell him, it will look less weird to her since you barely know him.” We stepped out of the bathroom and saw Julie was arguing with Jose. Again. Maggie was huddling over her pillow on the floor asleep in front of the window.
“I don’t have to listen to you, *****.” Jose spit at her. The blonde girls were sitting on the couch with no shirts on. They even wore matching bras. I could only speculate on what had started this particular argument.
“Oh please, Jose.” Julie said. “You know you don’t scare me. You don’t even know how to read. Maybe if you did the work I gave you, you might have a better life and you wouldn’t have to look for tail in the kiddie pool.” She jutted her chin at the girls on the couch. The girls did look to be a couple of years younger than Jose but I was pretty sure they were capable of making their own decisions. Even if those decisions were made by playing rock paper scissors.  The two girls gasped and added a few whatever’s to the argument.
“I know how to read.” Jose’s accent was getting thicker and his voice was getting louder. Maggie didn’t seem to notice. She kind of resembled a cat lying in the window curled around the pillow.
“Oh please. Reading text messages and looking at pictures doesn’t count as reading José and you know that.” Jose clenched his fist and got closer to Julie. She crossed her arms again and laughed at him.
“What are you going to do? Hit me?” she said, “Go ahead; I guess your life isn’t already ****** up enough as it is. What’s one more court appearance and jail sentence to you, right?” José was suddenly too close to Julie and somewhere between the two steps he had taken to get to her and her last remark he had produce a small gun. The girls on the couch gasped and Julie went very still. I watched her throat move as she swallowed and looked Jose in the eyes. He pressed the gun up against the side of her head.
