I Loved Religulous
I was 6-years-old and in second grade when my teacher (a nun) told the class that everyone who wasn't Catholic was never going to go to heaven... The best that 'non-believers' were going to achieve was Limbo. Well my mother was Catholic and my father, who was a very good man, was Lutheran (Not practicing because he didn't believe in religion, either.). This presented an emotional dilemma for me, so I raised my hand and asked a few questions:
Me: God is good, right?"
Nun: "Absolutely."
Me: "And God knows everything... past, present and future, right?"
Nun: "That's correct."
Me: "And people who aren't Catholic or commit crimes are going to either go to Limbo or Hell, right?"
Nun: "That's absolutely correct."
Me: "Then why would God make my father a Lutheran,, knowing that he'd never make it into heaven... and why would he create people who commit crimes like murder, just so he can send them to hell?"
Nun: "Go to the Principal's office!"
If a 6-yr-old can figure out that this is bullsh!t, and that Noah couldn't POSSIBLY have put 2 of every creature on the planet on Earth on an ark (After all orchids couldn't have made it underwater for 30-40 days and nights.), why do we have such a problem with these 'believers', no matter what religion to which they might subscribe? It's all just BELIEF.
I know that we, as living matter, have both substance and energy, and that when we die, we must go somewhere... But is it SO scary to just become part of the universal entropy? I must admit that I pray to my dead parents... not because they're living the good life up in heaven... but because I sometimes need personal strength. I understand that everyone needs something to believe in... Even if it's ‘Down with pay toilets!’… but good grief... Why can't we just be united as human beings... The ‘Us’ and ‘Them’ thing isn't working.
But what's the recourse we have for curing this dilemma... bombing the crap out of people who start trouble all over the world? It wouldn't be a bad idea if they'd all stay in one place for a while.
Perhaps I've diverging from the subject... Religion (not necessarily spirituality) is a very dangerous thing, put in the wrong hands/minds. Ever since man appeared on Earth, there have been deities and religions. This is going to be a tough one to beat, especially in the "Bible States", and most of the Middle East.
