Sliders - timer

I have the old phone they used to make into the timer for the tv show sliders...I would like to re-create it...just gathering some reference photos

Information

The digital readouts count down when activated. There are 250 random settings - from 99 days down to 5 seconds. Upon reaching zero, the light bar on top activates, indicating a "slide window". There are 3 LED's on the left side (red, green, and yellow) which flash in a random order. The green bucket brigade on the right - opposite the 3 LED's - flashes in 10 random sequences. The buttons have the following functions:

Button #1 increases the time on the counter.

Button #4 decreases the time on the counter.

Using these two buttons, you can select the amount of time you choose before your next slide. The power button (PWR) is the "on" button. The end button (END) is the (off) button. The two buttons in the middle are dummy buttons. The center knob (above the HRS, MINS, and SECS display) is fixed (doesn't move, as it didn't during the series). The decals are vinyl.

It runs on cellphone batteries (and charged using "Overnight" battery charger, which is included with the timer). When battery pack is reinserted the timer runs though a self-diagnostic and displays the actual pattern shown on the prop in the 2 hour Sliders premiere.

Thanks to Termalized Plastic for the information, and persmission to use the pictures.

The major problems with these components:

*You can still buy the phone on ebay...crazy init
*Big problem is where the dial comes from...the biggish black dial...
its not a dial which is common in terms of scale and size.
*Segment Eight LED's no idea where you can get the right sized segments that can fill 6 in a row..in that kind of space...
*What the main black box is made out of, again hard to tell
*Where the white block at the top comes from...where to get that?
*Going back to those figure eight led's you need a 555 timer chip and two other chips 74ls90 and 74ls48. These are old school components...you have to construct the circuit yourself...and you need like two chips per segment eight...the wiring in this thing needs to be clean cut and pro in order to fit into a unit of this size.

I will be working on all this when I get back this summer...I have already gutted out the phones...just figuring a way for the dials and stuff...even looking microwave dials...

the dial resembles something from a voltmeter...but this is TOO big for the sliders timer device.

Well I will certainly have a go...I have acquired a dial which could be used or look similar...since it is a dial.

The timer circuits could be done...I can try and fit about five 7 segment led's I am not sure they sell smaller ones as such...
however the circuity to fix it all up as a timer from 99999 could be a bit big and complex...it can be tricked however...just using some static numbers

erm...there may be a way to include a 8 flashy circuit so the edges of the led's light up...spin around like on the intro of Sliders.

I have got the main phone and can gut it out as so...however the black interface with the white writting baffles me a bit...it may be possible to have it photo printed...using some paint program construct a similar interface section...have it printed on high quality card or even a matt photo?! ...cut out the sections accordingly...

the top white block...looks to me like a prism...they say it is from a lamp thing but I have not come accross it.

The white panel on the flap looks like some disabled person's control face. Looks to me like some kind of hospital pad?

That white keypad, could probably again be made from a photo or highquality print. Sections left white should reveal this bar light thing.

If there is a semi-circular piece of plastic attached to the dial knob..to keep it in place.

It could also be used to reveal a various amount of constant red light?

I will also assume, that the top front piece...where the dial knob is...that is actually a thin square piece of plastic...with a whole for the dial knob. BEHIND the plastic piece is the printed or photo quality label...stating the days...and letting the circular light through.
