Reminiscing About My Childhood

Whenever I look back on my childhood I often reminisce about the summers I spent at my grandparents house. They lived in a small prairie town where everyone knew each other. But this was way back in the 60's when people could feel safe and trust their neighbors. As young girl remembering boarding the train. Walking along the side of the train as I heard the sound of the train. Once inside sleeping in a lower birth. As the train pulled out of the station at night, looking out our window at all the bright city lights. I would fall asleep listening to the sound of train riding along the tracks.

In the late morning we would arrive at a small train station where my grandparents were patiently waiting for us, but sometimes when my grandparents were not able to meet us a friend of my grandparents would be there. Once we got to the small town I recall calling my friend who I spent hours playing with. We would walk to the public swimming pool where we go swimming. And when we didn't go to the public pool we would run through the waiting pool that was sitting in the front yard. Afterwards, sitting watching the leaves that had fallen in the pool the sun shining down as a cool summer breeze blows through the water. I would spend some of my summer holidays at my grandparents house.

I have a lot of wonderful memories of that time. spending time with my friends and going to the restaurant where my friend would order french fries and gravy. And then a milk shake. Then there were days we would play a game of pool at the pool hall that my grandfather owned. And then going to the museum where we would see all the stuff animals. One of the boys who went with us tried scaring us to get close to the big buffalo who was stuffed and just standing there. Going on summer picnics with my grandmother was the most fun of all just being able to spend precious time with her. My grandmother would often take me grocery shopping with her we would go to the market and she would introduce me to the butcher where she bought her meat. And then she often would take me over to her friend's house for a visit.

From the time I was a little girl to when I was a teenager I would take long trips to visit my grandmother. I miss my grandmother she was a very loving and caring woman, but she passed away when I was in my early twenties. I will always cherish our time together.

A nostalgic report of the experience of a little child whose memory of her past may never be erased and will affect her life for ever. I enjoyed this short story.
