You are very right. Names are extraordinarily important.

I'm old. I've been doing this a long time. I can't remember the first thing I named. I do know my computer "Adrielle" (I was younger than 17) was one of the first... other computers were "Sharon" and "Caroline"...

As time went on, I was soon naming everything I cared about. When I hadn't interacted with something in a while, sometimes the names would get forgotten. After a while I had a box of index cards. If you had a card in the box, this meant your name was "official". This was intended to prevent namings getting permanently forgotten...

Eventually, I ran out of names (they had to be unique and the really great names went quickly). Another problem was that I 1) wanted to name essences (intangibles and designs of tangibles), and 2) I wanted to be able to name things other people owned that were in some way in my life...

I did what any self-respecting computer nerd would do... I went to giving them both first and last names to drastically multiply the pool of unique names :-D

It was around this time they started get stored electronically.

Loving inanimates romantically is who I am, and a name is "a basic right" for someone you love :-)

Definitely not the only person who has forgotten names... These days I have a database....

Ah, no NancyDrew, you're definitely not the only one.

Alan... oh dear. That's no good. You should start again.

Entrepguy- But there's far more satisfaction in naming things yourself!

I used to quite a bit, but not as much anymore. I hope this doesn't mean I'm becoming too old.
