I Need to Know More About Chiaris Malformation
Sept 30th 2006, a day that changed our famliy. It was Homecoming for our PARA Football leauge. The boys just had their pictures taken and the game was starting. At 6:50 pm a player went down in fumble recovery. It got quiet, we all were looking for our child, I kept thinking " where is Bryce, where is #40?" I knew it was him, I could feel my heart sink into my stomache. It was clear he could not move! Toes were pointed out as well as his hands. Within a minute his coach was on with 911, a very calm cool headed coach who walked toward looking as if he was going to vomit. He said," it is bad Kristin." 911 coded him with a broken leg, we heard 3 ambulances pull into the parking lot, then leave. He said ' Mom where are they going ?" I told him to just hang on there are aprents going to get them. We had parents run out to the highway trying to get then to stop ! Since he was coded wrong, he was not "priority". tell that to a little boy who can't feel his body. 45 minutes later they showed up. I won't get into , but I did not pay my $1000.00 co-pay for that ! They told us in Trama that he would most likely be paralyzed. The hit was so great it cracked his chin cup on his helmet, and had compressed C4-C5. Off to MRI, they came out and told me that they found a Chiaris malformation, and he should have never been playing football. I said," he has a what?" On day 3 in PICU Bryce showed signs he would walk again!! He has been up and going ever since. His Trama Dr. Cried when he walked by his room, he came in and told him he better live his life right by God ! The next year, Sept 14th of 2007 They had to go in and Decompress. Bryce had been losing all control of his left side of his body out of nowhere. The surgery went well, about 3 1/2 hours. Then in Jan of 2008 he got elbowed in the head at school, he was vomitting, and having trouble walking. He had a focal membrain leak. His Dr drained it twice over a few months, but the tingling in the hands and head were more than he could stand. This past June he had 3 surgerys in 26 days. After the repair his head just wanted to leak, so his Dr had to put in a shunt to releive the csf fluid build-up. It has been a tough 2 years. You would think after a child goes through all of that they would be down on life. Bryce has been asked to be the Football Manger at Pace High, a 5-A school who is known for going to States every year. He is in SGA, and last year was class president. He is in Future Buisness Leaders of America, and is the youth campaign Manager for for our friends campaign. This has not been a walk in the park by no means. It has changed everything we do as a family, we can't do alot of the sporting activities with Bryce in tow. This was a child who lived to watch Sports as a baby! I mean 6 months on!! Walked at 6 1/2 months old, rode a 2 wheeler at 2, he has always been active and loves all sports ! He was a gifted athlete, and now I tell him he is gifted at everything he touches : ) God Bless all of you living with this, and yor families! It is hard for us to see the pain you suffer through. It breaks my heart that your lives are forever changed with this. I want more people to know about this, and we will find a cure for this !!! Stay strong and keep your faith !! With much Love, Krsitn Sellers of Pace Florida
