Look? Yes. Dwell? No.

The past is past and cannot be changed.  I guess I've always known that, but it took a long time to really understand.  If we constantly look backwards, we are likely to miss opportunities coming toward us from the future.  And dwelling on the past does nothing positive; it only stirs up regrets and pain.

I do not dwell upon the past...but I do look.

I would not be the person I am today were it not for my past.  I would not have a fraction of the strength, passion, or integrity had things been easy.  So when things get hard in the now, I can glance over my shoulder at the then.  I remind myself of the lessons I've learned, and compare those situations to the now to see if those skills apply.  I look back at the rocky, perilous road I've already traveled, and take comfort in knowing that it's taught me an amazing amount of strength.  I glance over my shoulder and take comfort in knowing I've survived what would kill many people.

And then I focus once more on the road before me.
