Cahyana: THE INFLUENCE OF HANDICRAFT MEDIA IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ABILITY ON READING PROCEDURAL TEXT (An Experimental Study toward Ten Grade Students at Senior High School in SMA PLUS YAPIRI Cidaun-Cianjur)

English teaching will be achieved well if the main components of teaching and learning process especially teacher, student, material, method, and media are planed effectively. Unfortunately, there are some teachers who assume that media are both expensive and difficult to get; whereas media is neither expensive nor difficult but something easy to get. Teachers can be creative to utilize something around them. They can utilize used goods or simple tools such as paper, plastic, wood, tin plate, etcetera. Furthermore, these goods can be made a handicraft. For example, a teacher can teach students how to make a pencil box by utilizing a used plastic bottle.

This research takes the research questions that are how is the students’ abilitiy on reading procedural text by using handicraft media?; how is the students’ abilitiy on reading procedural text without using handicraft media?; and how are the significant differences of the students’ abilities on reading procedural text by using and without using handicraft media? In addition, this research is aimed to identify the students’ ability on reading procedural text by using handicraft media; to identify the students’ ability on reading procedural text without using handicraft media; and to analyze the significant differences of the students’ abilities on reading procedural text by using and without using handicraft media.

This research uses experimental aproach method that engages experimental group (teaching reading procedural text by using handicraft media) and control group (teaching reading procedural text by using conservative method-without using handicraft media). Therefore, quantitative data type is applied in this research. Moreover, data source in this research uses population of all students in SMA PLUS YAPIRI Puncakbaru, Cidaun-Cianjur that consist of 81 students. In addition, sample of this research takes one class of ten grade students that consist of 30 students. Data collection is gained by using observation, pre-test, and post-test.

The results of this research include the students’ abilitiy on reading procedural text by using handicraft media is better than without using handicraft media. It can be proven with the results of average score of pre-test is 64.83, and the results of average score of post-test is 73.80. In addition, the students’ ability on reading procedural text without using handicraft media is less than using handicraft media, indeed the average score of post-test gets decrease than pre-test. It can be proven with the results of average score of pre-test is 66.73, and the results of average score of post-test is 65.86. Finally, the significant differences of the students’ abilities on reading procedural text by using and without using handicraft media show significant differences. It can be proven with calculating post-test in experimental and control groups. It is gained that tcount is 5.84 and ttable with significance level 1 % is 2.46. It means that this research has proved that the use of handicraft media can improve students’ ability on reading procedural text.
