The Coupon LadyAt a place I worked in till a few months ago, there was a coworker I'd notice at lunch time or break times, she was always poring through magazines and newspapers, clipping out coupons. She wasn't someone who talked much to me, but I took note of it, kind of thinking "I ought to do that" in addition to, "Bless her heart." One day, she left break to go cashier up front, and another coworker mentioned how one of her close relatives has cancer, she just found out she has a crippling condition, and it is very difficult for her to get by as she is not qualifying for Medicaid and cannot afford to pay for her own health insurance through work. While I know anyone could do something if they truly wanted, it touched my heart that this lady was so beaten down with everything going on all at once in her life, it did seem one of those kind of moments in life a person could NOT do what they truly wanted, no matter how hard they worked with the tools currently in hand. As I was not able to give her money for various reasons, including that I am not independently wealthy or anything, I started combing newspapers and magazines for savings I could leave sitting on the break room table for her to find, without knowing it came from me. Every day I'd try to find something to bring in and leave for her. She got most of it too! It was kinda fun.
She was also mentioned to personnel as someone who might benefit from associate aid (we were a tight knit workplace that helped each other in that fashion), and funds were taken up for her later on, in addition to more flexibility in her work schedule.
