Blues/jazz Chords, And Dr. John Style

I am just learning the key board to

play any where anytime, and just do it.

i learned to play by sight reading classical,

but have switched to guitar, by ear. Now,

i am wanting to do old style country,

blues and songs by ear, without

music. it is like re-learning the instrument

all over again. Before, i couldn't play a note

without a sheet of music. Now, it is getting better.

I can't memorize worth **** songs, so this is the only

way i can sit down and jam is to just learn the keyboard-

scales, chords and all. and go by a straight 1-4-5 or similar 2-5-1

ball park progressions, and learn by the fake books.

my latest favorite song is Anastasia from way back when. i saw in my

old fake book. it helps me to learn the chords, and study them with this song.

pretty cool.

for some reason, i keep playing this Anastasia song from A LONG time
ago out of this old fake book i have. Over and over again, using that
as a guide to train my ear up. it is difficult enough to keep me interested
and to let me think i am getting somewhere. learning chords in e flat minor.
awesome chord changes, and a simple melody. this is nearly all i know - a full
song nearly by heart. the rest, i just move around with chords i know. like i said,
can't wait to sound like DR. John, or Jerry lee lewis one day...to jam by the heart, not
reading music !!!! so weird, i could play reading, then take the book away, I 'm screwed !
so, none of that, i want to have fun. love chuck berry's old piano pla<x>yer. and thanks again for the advice jimboa !

I wish I could play by ear...I have no ear for music at all (it's the part I always failed in my exams!). But 12 years worth of conservatory music training, I can read pretty well! You are lucky you can play by ear! Keep playing, the piano is a beautiful thing!

I play by ear but I am now learning to read notes which is hard to do when you are used to relying on your hearing.
