I started reading the trilogy a few times before I made it right through. The first time I was about 12 and got so frightened that I stopped - it was the scene where sam and frodo are hiding from the black riders and the black rider gets off his horse and starts crawling across the ground sniffing them out. Then I drove past the entrance to the farm, Lothlorein, in SA where Tolkein lived for so many years and I thought, right I have to get through these books. I absolutely loved them and at the last count have read the trilogy 9 times. Every time I read them I get something else out of the books.
