I Received Corporal Punishment At School
DISOBEDIENCE
The following story is a true account of my experience in a boy’s grammar school in the 1960s.
The school was run along traditional lines and in many ways attempted to imitate the traditions of public schools during that period. There were various sanctions that could be applied for misdemeanours which included detention, lines and impositions but the cane and slipper were widely used for a variety of transgressions. These were always applied with vigour to the offender’s bottom and were designed to deter and punish so that offences were not repeated.
A prefectorial system was in place so that boys who reached the upper sixth had a reasonable chance of becoming a prefect. I had the good fortune to be appointed to such a position of authority and was part of a team who was responsible for maintaining discipline within the school.
For serious breaches of the rules boys would be sent to the headmaster who after ascertaining the facts would administer the cane to the bottom of the naughty boy up to a maximum of 8 strokes. These were delivered with some force which would leave wheals across the boy’s backside and would make sitting down uncomfortable for a few days. For lesser offences boys could be sent to the PE teacher who happened to be on duty that day and would if the offence warranted it receive up to 6 strokes of the slipper. These were delivered full force by a strong young member of the PE staff after the boy concerned had been ordered to change into shorts with no protection underneath. The slipper was in fact a size 11 rubber soled plimsoll which hurt more that the cane and would leave a raised welt on the boy’s backside. It was certainly something to be feared and avoided.
On the day in question I was on break duty inside the school and it was my responsibility to ensure that boys were sent outside during break and did not linger in the toilets or cloakrooms. It was a cold day and during my rounds I found a couple of second year boys about 13 years old lingering in the toilets reluctant to go out. I soon asserted my authority and quickly ushered them outside with a warning not to return. A few minutes later I was passing the same place and as part of my duty decided to check the toilets for any boys who contrary to school rules were still inside. One of the boys who I had previously removed had managed to evade the prefects and was nonchalantly slouching against a radiator next to the wash basins. He was obviously defying my authority and so I warned him that if I found him indoors again he would be sent to the PE master to be dealt with. Usually that threat was a sufficient deterrent for the offence not be repeated. He was quickly ejected from the building and I thought that was the end of the matter. Some 5 minutes later however I was walking past the door of the same toilet and decided for no particular reason to look in expecting to find it unoccupied. I was shocked and annoyed to find the same boy standing by the radiator. At that instant we both knew what the inevitable outcome would be.
I immediately instructed him to make his way to the PE masters office and although he begged me to give him lines or detention I had set my mind on the punishment I considered he deserved. I followed him down the corridor to the office and I must confess my eyes were fixed on the back of his trousers which were rather tight and suggested his bottom would make an ideal target for the slipper. From time to time he would look back over his shoulder with pleading eyes and his hand would gently rub his behind as if to console that part of his anatomy. I was not to be moved. On arrival at the office which was located in the changing rooms I knocked on the door and explained to the PE master the nature of the offence. At this point I only expected the boy to receive one or at the most two strokes of the slipper for a relatively minor infraction of the rules. Even one hard whack with the plimsoll across a barely protected bottom hurt like hell and would leave a raised welt which would later turn into a bruise. The teacher listened to my description of the offence nodding occasionally as if deciding the severity of the punishment. He asked the boy if my description of events was correct after which he decided on the sentence. When he announced that the boy was to receive three strokes of the slipper I was somewhat surprised at the severity of the sentence but at the same time gratified that my authority as a prefect had been supported and would not be questioned in the future. Tears immediately appeared in his eyes and he begged the PE master not to give him 3 strokes but to no avail there was no escaping the forthcoming beating. I must admit I thought his small round bottom was ideally suited to receive corporal punishment. I was just about to walk away when the PE master asked if I would stay and witness the punishment as my authority had been undermined and I could see justice done. I couldn’t believe my luck. To see that round little bottom get soundly punished was a huge added bonus.
At this point the boy was instructed to change into his shorts with no underpants for the slippering to be carried out. I supervised him while he changed and I must confess I had a certain amount of sympathy when I saw his creamy coloured bottom cheeks which were going to receive such a severe walloping from the slipper. The shorts barely covered his posterior and would offer little or no protection from a strongly wielded slipper. After changing he was instructed to make his way into the gym for the punishment so that the PE master had sufficient room for a full swing of the plimsoll. When inside I ordered the boy to face the wall and wait for the PE master to arrive to administer the punishment. My eyes were fixed on the back of those shorts and I wondered how the boy must have felt knowing that shortly he was to have his bottom soundly beaten with the plimsoll. I must confess that at this point I was keenly anticipating what was to come. After a couple of minutes the PE master came in carrying the large slipper in his hand and even I winced when I saw the size of it. The boy was quite tearful but by now had resigned himself to his fate from which there was clearly no escape.
He was instructed to move away from the wall bars and bend over. He presented his lightly clad bottom to the PE master for his undivided attention. I was standing behind the boy slightly to one side so that I had a good view of his backside and could also see his face. The atmosphere became tense as the PE master moved forward tapped the boys bottom a couple of times with the plimsoll took a step backward rotated his upper body and brought the plimsoll down with all his might across the centre of the proffered bottom. It landed with a tremendous smack that caused the boy to take a step forward but to his credit he remained in position. He screwed his face up as the sting mounted in his rear but after a few seconds as it started to subside the second stroke was delivered. The procedure was repeated and the plimsoll landed on precisely the same spot. On an already sore bottom the pain must have been excruciating and it caused the boy let out a small cry as the plimsoll made contact. At this point mixed emotions raced through my mind on the one hand I felt sorry for the lad but justice was being done and that part of a boy’s anatomy that was designed to be punished was paying the price for its owner’s disobedience. The third stroke seemed the hardest of all and after it was administered the boys’ hands flew to the seat of his shorts to try and ameliorate the throbbing sting in his bottom. Very quickly he was dismissed and ordered to get changed so that he did not miss any of his next lesson. I again supervised him during this period and was able to observe his well punished bottom. The whole of his seat was swollen crimson red with more than a hint of purple and seemed to visibly throb. I felt justice had been done and that the boy would in future stay in the playground during breaks.
Of course no permanent harm was done his bottom recovered and no doubt was caned and slippered during his school career but the whole episode is something I have never forgotten.
