Douglas Fairbanks Sr. (1883-1939): American actor who also directed and produced films. He made a mark as a swashbuckler in films such as The Thief of Baghdad, Robin Hood and The Mark of Zorro (all silent films). His first talkie was The Taming of the Shrew and the last was The Private Life of Don Juan. A co-founder of United Artists (1919), he was the first to host the Oscar awards ceremony in 1929.
