School Days

A personal story in the experience: I Remember Going To Rock Concerts
I could never really figure it out until I had a child and he went to school.  I can't say that I knew right away something was different with my son but as time went on I knew something was up.  He was very busy.  I sent him to two preschools with the same results.  Then came kindergarten.  I kept hearing from the teacher how he couldn't sit still or focus.  Constant notes coming home and his star getting moved.  His pediatrician said nothing was wrong.  I knew he was wrong.  He refused to let me get him tested.  He said "Boys will be boys."  I switched schools after two months.  Taking him out of public school and putting him in a charter school with less kids.  Still the same results.  I finally found a doctor that tests for Adhd that would take my son because of his age.  The results of the testing was he had severe Adhd.  I got a new pediatrican and then hooked up with a great neurologist.  Then got in touch with the advocacy alliance in my area.  I put him back in public school just this year.  He is doing well. He has had some medication adjustments and sees a therapist and has special help at school.  His grades for first quarter in third are all A's and B's.  I hope it continues.  My family has not completely accepted my son's disbility.  My husband has helped with my son and supports him totally.  I recently began to take interest in the computer and have gotten a lot of information for my son's disbility.  In doing that I discovered I myself have it.  It all suddenly became clear to me.  All those years ago my parents made me repeat sixth grade, all the trouble I had getting through school.  Why I don't function even now like everyone else.  Why my spouse gets frustrated with me when I don't understand what he is telling me.  I have always felt alone.  Like I was different from everyone else.  I could never finish things I started.  I took things the wrong way when people said or did things.  My thoughts were all over the place in my head.  I have to constantly write myself notes.  I forget a lot all the time.  I could continue but I am sure you get the just of it.  Now I know all those years ago when my parents said if I only applied myself in school why I couldn't no matter how hard I tried.  I want to get diagnosed but have no insurance and the doctor says it will take $300.00.  I don't have it!  So I go through life like I always have.  But at least I know now why I am the way I am and I am not alone!  And I am my child's advocate and will make sure he will not be left behind!
