I Remember My First Kiss
The jump from grade 5 to grade 6 was colossal. The one year everyone was comparing playstation games and summer camps and the next we were competing for boyfriends and planning our first kisses. Proper kisses, of course. Not kissing-touchers-kisses. Up until that point it had never fully dawned on us that tongue could be involved, but when it was mentioned it suddenly made sense.
We were twelve, it was 2002 and very few of us had access to the internet. What we knew was based on hearsay - from older siblings or from friends who had "had" theirs.
We had been dating for a few weeks. I didn't really have a crush on him, but in a bout of introspection had dumped the boy I REALLY wanted to kiss.
We went to the 8pm movie one evening, my evil best friend came along too. It was "Black Knight". Afterwards we milled around the quiet shopping centre and the two of them kept flipping a coin and excluding me from conversation. It didn't bother me, I was a gloomy little thing and was convinced that all bad things - including my evil best friend hooking up with my boyfriend - would happen to me.
Somehow we found ourselves in the passageway by the restrooms. I remember we were standing next to a large firehose. We didn't really say anything. My phone was vibrating - it was past 22:00 and my parents were waiting for me.
It was cool, I think. Our noses didn't bump, he didn't drool - it was pretty perfect for a first kiss; if not for the fact that my heart was beating faster for the even and not for the boy it involved.
Evil best friend said she was keeping a lookout. I still think she was staring and taking pictures or something.
When we were done I made the mistake of answering my phone with "Sorry Dad, we lost track of time!"
I broke up with that boy soon thereafter. My second first kiss was way more electric.
