I Remember My First Painful Breakup
I never dated in high school. I never saw the point, since it just seemed so petty. So I was the girl who never dated anyone, who got picked on for being a virgin and I didn't have any religious excuse to hide behind. Ultimately I didn't care, though. I was happy to just focus on school, helping out with my little sis and brother, who were 10-14 and 7-11 respectively, do ballet, and read. When I graduated I decided that I was going to take a year off. I shipped off to France to live with my mothers family.
While I was there, my uncle introduced me to a coworker of his, Lothair. Well, I think you can see where this is going. Lothair and I became involved with each other, started going on dates, and I started staying at his apartment. With him. Yes, I lost my virginity to Lothair. I loved him and he loved me. We were both star-crossed lovers, and he was so romantic. He was mature, refined, affectionate. He took me on amazing dates, from grand ballets to little cafes, surprised me with flowers, clothing, jewelry, chocolates. I was captivated by him. He inspired me, and I deeply fell in love with him. He made me promises, that he would take me places, that he would take care of me, and, after an 8-month anniversary date he promised that he would eventually marry me. I had stars in my eyes. I dreamed of our wedding in the lavender fields of Provence, in a ruffled white dress that blew in the breeze, with a vintage diamond ring and a bouquet of fresh lavender.
This all crashed down, of course, when I surprised him at work, the same time his wife decided to surprise him. And she was lovely. She was around his age (early 40s), thin, blonde, and very sophisticated. I'm talking Armani suit sophisticated. I didn't know who she was, and she told me she was meeting her husband for lunch. I asked her how long they'd been married, she said 16 years. When Lothair came out of his office, he looked at her, and looked at me, and he was stunned in a very special, "just saw my wife and lover together" way. I left without saying a word to him.
I was horrified, and he came out to see me at my aunt's house. We drove around together, fighting and screaming at each other, eventually pulling over on stretch of highway where we screamed at each other for another hour, and it got very heated. We didn't stop seeing each other, I hate admitting. We saw each other a few more times, always angry but passionate, and sometimes heated, sometimes lovely. But I managed to break it off a month before I left, and I tried to enjoy my last few weeks of France, but it was hard. I was heartbroken.
I have a wonderful man now, who doesn't make empty promises or lie to me, and I've definitely stepped up. I'm his #1 woman, his only woman.
