Wood Stoves

Both my grandmothers lived in old houses with wooden stoves. These were used for both heating and cooking but they burned so well, there was never any imternal smoke. They could cook quite well on these. One had an old ice-chest from pre-refrigeration days. Both houses had remnants of stables out the back. Each had an old discarded room full of junk and memories. These places taught me a lot about local history. In some ways, in their time life was simpler and healthier. Food was natural and fresh- poultry and eggs from the hen-house, fish from the river and vegies from the garden.
