It Was Too Close...I lived then in northern New Jersey, about 20 miles west of the city. When I walked out on the deck by my kitchen door, I could see the smoke. I was a disaster coordinator for my town and spent most of the next 3 days making sure the local firefighters had food and clean gear, as my engine company was manning a firehouse in Brooklyn. My nephew is a professional firefighter, and he had only graduated the academy that July. He spent 4 days working in the pit, and I watched him age overnight. 4 died from my hometown and 300 were involved in the rescue efforts.
