I Respect Honesty and Integrity
Over the last week, I have found out that I am a dinosaur.....or at least on the endangered species list. I was raised to believe in the Golden Rule: “that one should behave toward others as one would have others behave toward oneself”. I have always believed that the Golden Rule joins the other three pillars of a civilized society: Truth, Integrity and Honesty. In my opinion, none of these is ever to be optional. I have found that I am in the minority. It is distressing to see that some others, maybe many others, do not value these foundation stones as I do.
There are quotes after quotes of why these pillars are important. From the humorous...such as those from Mark Twain:
“Always tell the Truth. That way, you don’t have to remember what you said.”
“Truth is the most valuable thing we have, so I try to conserve it.”
Then there is the thought provoking....like those quotes of Thomas Jefferson and W. Clement Stone:
“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.”
“Have the courage to say No. Have the courage to face the Truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.”
Some will call these core values naive, foolish or outdated. Some selectively practice one..or two...maybe all of them, yet only when it suits them best. That is fine for them. I cannot function in that way. And I never will.
I am guilty of blind loyalty. I am guilty of believing what is said...or in what is not said. It has repeatedly come back to hurt, or haunt, me in the past. Knowing that, most would forget about those pillars...and live with their selective use...to benefit themselves....at the cost of others. In other words, to “do unto others before they can do unto you”.
I cannot live that way....and I never will.
My view of the world is simplistic....even when I know the complexities are out there. I will get hurt and haunted again. I know this. But I will not compromise.
Is this the correct forum to post such writing? Probably not. If you disagree...that is your right. I post it not for others...but for my own peace of mind....as a reminder of why I believe as I do.
