Across the Road

I t was a long time ago, when I was a teen. Late at night and I saw a strange orange light coming through my window.  We lived out in the country about 7 miles from the nearest city that had a fire department.  There was a volunteer fire department about 5 miles away, but no fire hydrants out there.  We had a pond but no way to get the water that far across the road.  The family was just building it, too, and living in a trailer on the property.  We were outside trying to keep the embers from catching our field on fire and we carried water to throw on their trailer.  Other neighbors broke out windows so they could get out what they could before it was too late.  It was so sad to watch!  At least no people were hurt. They eventually rebuilt but that was something I will never forget.
