I agree, sky. It´s truly heartbreaking listening to those sweet looking children spewing all that indoctrinated hate they have learned from their parents.

    It is beyond sad.

I am so sad to hear the children saying that. It makes me cry every time I hear a kid use such hateful language. No child deserves that kind of childhood.

This video chilled me to the bone. All the WBC smiles were especially scary.
Chagrinned's comment that these people do not speak for Christianity, is typical. Just like trying to talk to a Catholic about the rape of children in their church. "That stuff doesn't happen in MY church."
Religion kills brain cells, I am sure of it.

Yes, Lilt, that´s pretty much typical : Kill the messenger.

And I also agree with you on the smiles.
One thinks these people couldn´t any creepier, until they smile.

      Lilt,

Trying to make the point that I am in denial about this is ridiculous. It obviously does happen, and I'm just as repulsed by it as anyone else. I was simply making the point that many, (not all), Christians would never accept this as proper behavior or viewpoints, even though the people in this video profess to be Christians. Is it really wrong for me to make this distinction? For the record, I never stated that I was a Christian.

I have to admit, I'd love to see these people hauled off to jail just as much as the next person, but free speech is still a right in this country. (Unfortunate in this case.) Please don't over-simplfy or distort my views. Thanks.

Thank you for your respectful response, Chagrinned.
You and I certainly disagree. I see most religious institutions as brainwashed cults. Westboro calls their congregation Christian. Why shouldn't I think that other Christian churches have the same ethics and values?

I guess people don't want to come to terms with their mortality, if that is what's in store for them spiritually. It's the search for truth we all must ponder . . many hope there is more to their existence than flesh and bone. I wish that too, even though I have doubts: ) There are many good people in the Christian churches out there, unfortunately, there are the others as well. I think I'll have a glass of wine and kill some more of my brain cells! Lol!

      Absolutely true.

Iniquity - Absence of moral or spiritual values or an unjust act, it is a combination of in-, "not," and aequus, "equal, just," from Latin. Lack of justice or righteousness; wickedness; injustice

I wonder if somehow the WBC and some other christian crazies out there cut this out of their bibles as it doesn´t suit their cherry picking ways of indoctrination.

I'm sure they cut a lot out of their Bibles, and I'm even more sure none of them even bother to read it from cover to cover. Jesus preached against religious hypocrites far more than he ever preached against "sinners."

Some of them are professional cherry pickers ( Bible style).

If you read the comments on the video thread you will see comments like this :

"The Old Testament does not apply to me as a Christian, the Gospel isn't in the OT, its in the NT. And I doubt you have read at least an excerpt of the Bible."

This happens to be the same poster that tells other people to Burn in Hell Forever everytime they disagree with his , ehem, christian views.

So you really believe most Christians behave this way? As someone else stated, these people would be better termed a cult. We were in Washington DC this summer, and as we were standing outside the White House, a group of people such as this made the same comments and hate speech against homosexuals. It was the CHRISTIANS in the crowd who stood up against the people preaching that God hates homosexuals. Thus, simplifying, judging, and assuming that all people who label themselves Christians act this way, is in itself wrong. Just my 2 cents.

I know you are trying to make a point but I have never said all christians behave this way. However these people are christians (not muslims, jews or wiccans ) so I can´t call them anything else.

I understand what you are saying, but when you use the label, Christian, that encompasses many people who would be just as offended as you are about what these people are doing in the name of Christianity. And yes, you could call them something else. I hope I didn't upset you with my comments.

But sadly the bible condemn homosexuality and sex outside marriage, and most christians follow the teachings of the bible and some to the letter.

Point taken. I would say they are a perversion of the faith. No matter what group of people you may talk about, there will always be nut jobs who give the others in that organization a bad reputation. Berangere referred to them as fanatics, which is probably more accurate. These days you have to be careful how you label folks, because our society is super sensitive to this. Most of the Christian people I know are non-judgemental, loving individuals who do missionary work, feed the hungry, and preach love as opposed to hate. Call them what you will, just be prepared for the fact that someone may be offended by this association.

I had someone drop me here, recently, because I called her on something judgemental, and untrue, that she said "in general" about atheists. I was offended by what she said, and respectfully said so. It isn't the first time this has happened to me, either. I had to, myself, drop another who went on an atheist hating spree. One I thought a lot of as a person and a friend, until she did that. I have ZERO friends in RL, largely because I don't go to church. And a lot of times, if I do manage to make one, and they find out I don't believe, they conveniently find ways to avoid me, then abandon me. Good riddance if they can't accept a differing opinion or thought, or accept people on the basis of how they are treated by them, and not by the fact they think differently. That is MY experience with "most christians". Sorry.... I know there are those who are accepting and loving, but they seem few and far between, from the things I observe and deal with. I don't think UC is trying to offend with this post. I think she is trying to bring to light that there are psychos out there who are allowed to spew their hate, brainwash their children, and just get away with it. And how wrong it is, in whatever the religion's name they do it in....

Great comment , destry. I appreciate your honesty and your insight in this matter. Needless to say, I totally agree with you, as I share the same point of view and I have experienced similar situations with people who refuse to accept there is anything other than their faith. Thank you for your kind comment.
Just like you, I understand not all people of the christian faith behave in this atrocious manner but I also see how some would much rather debate the issue of labeling the Westboro Baptist Church as a Christian institution instead of showing enough indignation on the despicable acts of bigotry and child abuse perpetrated by the Phelps family in the name of religion.

I don't usually get involved in these discussions, but I really feel like Chagrinned is getting a bum rap on this one. I agree the video is vile. I agree that the Westboro Baptist Church is vile. So does Chagrinned. I also agree with him that these people are not representative of most Christian denominations or of Christian values. No need to vilify all of Christianity because of some rogue nut jobs. What good does that do?

I saw this on TV,they are fanatics,I believe it is a form of mental illness, they are also very deluded and nothing can shake their delusions,it is heartbreaking to see them poison their children's mind. Freedom of speech is a good thing but in this case it is a huge stumbling block effectively stopping the Authorities from doing something to protect those young, suggestible and vulnerable people.

Yes, this documentary is better seen on an empty stomach.

These people should be in straitjackets and have their kids taken away to live a normal childhood elsewhere and not the poisoned one they are having to endure thanks to their parents´ christian insanity.

It´s even sadder that they breed and indoctrinate little kids with all that bible sponsored hate and bigotry from an early age.

Their behaviour is repulsive but what they are doing to their children is tantamount to child abuse.
