Pretty Flowers For a Princess
“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not been discovered.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
I have been a very creative and very realistic person even as a young child so the outdoors was a great place for me to play in. My imagination would allow me to think up all kinds of scenarios while the props were usually cheap to find or imagine up.
Anyway when I was real little, I would act like I was a princess and the dandelions became my best friend (also made sure that I didn't get in trouble for picking "flowers". The puffy headed ones would become a scepter for me or something that I could make my royal wishes to spread around the kingdom. At other times, I could put them in my hair as I played.
Finally in m later days in elementary schools, they became my tool to show my beliefs. I found out that if you pick the yellow flowerheads then press them against your skin, they make a nice dark yellowish dye. I would mark symbols or dabs of color on my hands and/or arms, whispering in my head that I was a daughter of Gaia and these were my marks. And so it is the power of dandelions can be seen as a symbol of my religious beliefs as well.
Just remember that if you pick or use the dandelions for their color that you don't put you fingers in your mouth or near them until they've been washed.
