Why Not Me?

My whole life I have wanted to be a famous country music singer. I have done all I can to get my foot in the door but I am ignored on all sides. Now I am 33 years old and my life is over. I'm too old now. They only want the 19 year old " Taylor Swift" type. I wish I was dead because nothing else matters. This was all I ever wanted.

Dear FML1979,

Country music is not only for 19 year olds... Look at LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntire, or Dolly Parton. They're 30+, one is old as dirt, and they're doing just fine. Some female singers may start younger but others don't. And there's still a market for them in their old age... BECAUSE PEOPLE LOVE TO HEAR 'EM SING.

If that's all you want out of life, then keep on freaking sing. And, if a certain record label doesn't want your voice, then sing to crowds of people that do.

If singing country music is what you love, then JUST KEEP ON DOING IT. Who cares if you get famous doing what you love if you are pursuing your passion? Will a nicer car, a mansion, or a plaque in the country music hall of fame get you happiness? NO. Duh. It's about the singing. It's about expressing your self, your soul, in the best way you know how.

If it's the fame you want, you're just a dog chasing its own tail. Fame? Completely overrated... even torturous. Watch the Russell Brand interview on the nature of fame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qdNBrzAQjo). In his words, "growing up in Essex and thinking ‘oh yes, I want to be famous’ and now I am famous and what does it mean? Ashes in my mouth."

Keep singing. Love singing. Go to a freaking restaurant to do it if you can't put it on an album. If that's what you love, pursue it till its end... until the end. Again, in his words, " it’s not what you think it’s gonna be, if you are pursuing it for it’s own end then that’s ridiculous and unfulfilling…you are misinformed and you are due to experience great dissatisfaction…"

Maybe you will become famous one day. If you do, who cares? That's not why you should be singing, as even obtaining the goal will bring nothing but discontent. Do what you love, love what you do, and forget about the consequences.

Keep singing. Good luck (but you DON'T NEED IT).
