How Bad Are Mine?

A personal story in the experience: I Suffer From Anxiety and Panic Attacks
I ’d like some opinions from people who have panic attacks on the severity of mine. Basically what I want to know is: I’ve assumed mine are comparatively mild, is it worth going on medication for them?

I live with depression, and have been taking Cipramil for 8 years. In times of works stress (such as the last 2-3 months of last year), I have them about thee times a week. Normally only one every couple of weeks. When it happens the sequence is:

  • Intense feeling of déjà vu.
  • Intense feeling of nausea, accompanied by feelings of terror and panic.
  • Then its like time stops: I see myself at the single point in the whole continuum of my life, I see where I’ve been, where I am now, and where I’m going. And I feel like I’m afraid, and I’m going to lose everything I have achieved and accomplished.
  • Lots of sweat, blood runs from my face.
  • Anger, as I’m pissed off as its happened again.
  • Then I try to regain control, and get my **** together.

Overall the feeling is probabaly more anxiety than panic – no prizes for guessing that I have mental health issues generally, I already know that. But as the vast majority of the attacks come and go in about 5-10 minutes, I don’t really know if its worth taking any meds, or even if there are any.

Any thoughts or advice would be most welcome. Many thanks folks.

Thanks humbold and cugirl. I know you'r both right, however I know exactly what the issues are (been in counselling twice before - second one also hypnotherapy, and also have a degree in Psychology myself). Problem is I have neither the time nor the cash to spend months/years in counselling again. I know its lazy, I just want the quick fix!!

I have had panic attacks off and on for 25 years. I keep Xanax with me, wherever I go. I don't often need to take it, but just knowing that I have it seems to help. Maybe it would be helpful to you.
