Oh My, Can We Rewind This?
Posted January 14th, 2010 at 11:01AM
I just got back from my rheumatologist and every time I see him I am reminded of the enormous gaffe I made two years ago. I remember, I sure hope he forgot. He had just moved to his new office building and it was my first appointment since the move.
Maybe I should describe him before I continue. He looks to be about seventy five years old, he's very skinny and has a very dry personality. He doesn't talk much and never smiles.
So I walk into his office and he has new pictures on his desk. One is of a beautiful, 20 something, smiling young woman, and two others of an adorable baby girl. So I ask him very politely ''is this your daughter?''. He, not seeing that I am looking at the young woman's picture, answers just as politely ''yes she is''. If I had left it at that all would have been fine, but I had to add '' your granddaughter is just adorable''. To which he dryly replied ''she is my daughter, the other picture is of my wife''. Oh my, now this doctor jabs needles into my joints so it is not in my best interest to insult him. ![]()
Of course, I apologized profusely and have refrained from commenting on any new picture on his desk since then.
The funny thing is that he is now much more talkative with me. I guess he figures that if he talks, I won't!!!![]()

Ranks right up there with the ultimate male gaff when upon seeing a woman with a belly bulge asks, "When is the baby due?" Then quickly looks for a place to hide when the dagger stare comes and through gritted teeth she responds, "I'm NOT pregnant!"

Thank heavens I have small feet, JB, because I have a knack for putting them in my mouth-LOL!!!
So true, pamperurft! Thankfully I was able to save my friend who goes to the same doctor from making my mistake. -
you were right Jo, assuming it was his grand-daughter. Trouble is, the world has become so diverse, the social norms so variable, then we cannot assume anything any more about a stranger. In a sense, we are all the poorer for that, because our social cohesion suffers.

LOL !!!

I may have been right in my assumption, AT, but I should not have blurted out my assumptions. You do not want to insult he who wields the big needles!!

Yes, Analyzer, I turn a very nice shade of crimson-LOL!!!!

Very, very funny!!! I sooo could have done this...but hey sounds like he may have a hidden sense of humor. :)

Maybe, Frito, but it seems to be very well hidden.
