Telepresence With My DogI attached a little wireless camera with a built in mic, to a little helmet I put on my dog, powered via a 9v battery, then had the video feed go to a bi-optic hmd video glasses I wore with a receiver for the audio/video signal coming from the transmitter on my dog. I rigged up a battery pack to it to make it mobile, so i could move around and get close to the range of the wireless camera, which had a very minimal transmit range.
It was an interesting experience. Seeing and hearing the world from the point of view of my dog.
Of course the all important sense of smell could never be satisfactorily replicated, at least not with anything laying around the house, perhaps there could be some bionic olfactory bulb interface enhancement feasible with the right sensors, but who k,nows how such sensory data would ultimately be processed...anyway...
It was quite interesting to see what my dog was seeing, in real time, wandering around in the yard, sniffing at things, hearing her panting in my ears from the headphones from the audio feed from the receiver, with the sound of her chewing quite loud whenever she found something to munch on.
After a few minutes of this it was kind of sureal to then call her and see in my telepresence vision see myself come into view, hearing her feet on the deck, seeing myself getting closer, with my ridiculous hmd on, then using her p.o.v. to reach foward and pet her, feeling her hair under my fingers, while seeing me petting *myself/her*
I'd like to put use a long range telepresence system like this on a dolphin or a bird, or some other animal. That would be sweet. I think on one level it produces a sense of empathy with the animal; it is certainly is an interesting experience.
